Hi Mike,
Valances - I'm not sure if these serve any particularly useful purpose, other
than preventing water/mud spray from the wheels from spraying all over the
engine. Could be useful around the distributor - I've ground to a halt
shortly after driving through a puddle, but then I do have a (rather tatty)
valance that side! The valances either side of the radiator (I noticed you
have one) are rather more useful, guiding air through the radiator to improve
cooling, although you don't seem to have any problems on that front anyway.
LRP - I'll second the advice not to mix different brands at the pumps, or
different brands of additive. Different suppliers use different chemicals to
replace the lead, and these are not compatible, they can react to each other
unfavourably (what exactly this would cause I have no idea!). Also, one major
Triumph specialist (might have been Quiller) discovered that LRP was eating
through their standard rubber fuel hoses at a horrible rate - they did a test
by putting a section of the same hose in LRP, normal unleaded, and 4*, and the
tube in the LRP rotted half away within a week or so. I don't know what brand
of LRP they used. So, if you are going the LRP route, keep a close eye on
those fuel hoses (bearing in mind that if they are rotting, it is from the
inside out, so the damage won't be easy to spot until the thing bursts!).
Daffy is lucky - when she had a re-con engine a couple of years ago, I made
sure it was un-leaded compatible, so I have no such problems!
Also, I have already found one BP garage that has stopped supplying LRP. How
much longer will the other ones last...?
