Make sure the gear oil was an Extreme Pressure oil. Not all gear oils are,
and our trannies require it. I believe Valvoline makes an EP 80W90 gear oil.
That's from memory, so it's not 100%.
And you should have a heavier oil in the engine for the summer months.
Probably 20W50. Or you could switch to synthetic. I'm using the Castrol
Syntec 5W15 in the winter, but will switch to a slightly thicker one shortly
for the summer months. Mobil 1 supposed to be better, but the Castrol is a
blend, and if I should need to top off the oil on a journey someplace,
they have Castrol everywhere. Probably not a necessary thought, but I had
it nonetheless.
And I tend to not use oils with detergents. Can anyone confirm that the
detergents aren't a good idea for our engines? Oh, and be sure to add a
fuel filter if your car doesn't have one. The clear tube kind that every
auto store has in the performance section is cheap, and useful for fuel
starvation issues later down the road.
