rear spring removal

Hi folks -
I'm enjoying the wealth of knowledge available on this fine list. Thank-you.
My problem - I am changing the rear roadspring on my '80 Spit and cannot
seem to be able to free it from the top of the diff. I have removed all leafs,
spring plate and bolt that passes through the main leaf, but it seems wedged
in the channel.  Any ideas?
