Changing pads is about the easiest thing you can do on any car, I think. A
complete rebuild - in my book, at least - involves removing front calipers,
taking out the pistons, cleaning them thoroughly, making sure the bores
aren't pitted inside, putting in all new seals and reassembling. And all
new rear cylinders, new pads and shoes of course.
Getting the pistons out of the calipers can be a pain. I used compressed
air at a fairly low pressure, but I don't recommend it. Next time, I'll rig
up a grease gun and press them out with that - much safer.
I suggest you overhaul just one rear brake at a time, so you always have
something to look at if you forgot how all them springs and stuff went
together. Expect lots of fiddling with those springs. I haven't found an
easy way of reassembly yet. Perhaps others can help here.
