The seats in my 76 had a good back on the driver side and a good bottom on
the passenger side. I used a local Upholsterer, who replaced the foams with
several different weights depending on bottom or sides, made the passenger
back, the driver bottom for 200 bucks. I can not tell the difference
between the new or the old parts. I was extremely satisfied.

Your description of the seat base foams answers
the question I put to the list a week or two ago about
seat model variations. The foam bottoms just didn't seem
right. As you said, middle too thick, sides too soft.

The best deal is probably Rimmer's annual "free shipping" deals.
I installed their seat covers, and I was happy with them.
I also got their foams. I was happy with the seat back foam,
but I found that the seat base foam was too soft around the edges,
and a bit too thick in the middle. Also they did not use
real molded latex foam like the original. Thus, I ended up with
great-looking seats, but with less butt-support than the
28-year-old originals.
The main problem with my original foams was that the ridges
that run up each side of the back had completely disintegrated
into a pile of greasy sticky bits. Also, the headrest foam
was gone. Ironically the foam at the center of the seat back
looked almost like new.
But I have no idea how many places actually manufacture these foams,
or if any of them might be better than what Rimmer sells. Without
actually seeing and handling them it is hard to tell.
