Chances are if you had a whining noise, coupled with a diff leak - and you
didn't top off the diff to insure that it was full, then you probably
toasted the rear end.  With very little lubrication, the gears would fail
first giving you that whining noise increasing in intensity the more they
wore, followed by bearing noise if left without oil for much longer.  The
residual oil coating the bearings would probably spare them from as rapid
wear as the ring and pinion, but from what you have stated, with the
symptoms you describe, I'd have to say you've destroyed the ring and
pinion.  Time for a differential replacement - topping it up now would be a
waste of oil -
