Jason, try putting your nut back on and tighten down as tight as you can
possibly get it, and then remove it again. This has the effect of loosening
the rusted on crap a bit better.

Never underestimate the power of a couple of light taps with a hammer.
Also, have you tried rocking the wheel?
I was able to get mine off without a puller using this method. It was
pretty heavily encrusted too.
