Here's a trick that I've used several times successfully on a standard
downdraft type carb. It might be harder to do with a side draft, but...
dump some automatic transmission fluid down the carb throat while it is
running. As a plus, it cleans out the carbon too. (and I've been told by a
mechanic that it lubricates the valves, but I'm not quite sure) Keep your
finger on the throttle cable, as you will have to up the idle a bit.
It will smoke like the dickens.... Have someone look under the car and see
where the white smoke is coming out.....
I have done this for years on my several of my cars, I can see no possible
damage that can occur by doing this (with the exception of cars with O2
sensors), but it is a suggestion only, do it at your own risk.
Bill
(it is kinda fun, you WILL get all sorts of looks from your neighbors!)

Subject: exhaust hole
I have a hole in my exhaust, I don't think it's very big because I can't
see it, although I can hear it, problem is that I can't find it! Any
suggestions as to how I might go about tracking it down so that I can
repair it with some exhaust putty?
cheers
John
