It's darn hard to detect bad u-joints just by grasping and shaking the axle or
yoke.  Even experts can easily get tripped by them.  They are just held in too
firmly for your punny forces to impress then enough to show their looseness.
But with a few minutes of work, you can reveal their wear secrets.

Unbolt the four bolts holding the inner flanges together.  Now you've got the
play you need to detect slop in the u-joints.
