inaccurate tachometer

My tachometer seems to be very inaccurate, and kinda wobbles back and forth.
It doesn't seem to go past 2000. Any suggestions? I have the Crane ignition
system, and things are hooked up correctly, to my knowledge. The ground wire
on the tach goes to the steering column.
