MSD and Crane both make multiple-spark systems - each time the
distributor gets to a new plugwire, it sends out a series of sparks
(10-20, depending upon conditions and model) instead of one under the
theory that if the first one doesn't burn all the gas/air, the next one
will, or the next one will, or the next one will . . . .
Tachs try to count each spark and end up registering none of them. The
add-on part is a simple transformer coil that aggregates all those pulses
and shows them to the tach as a single pulse.
