Said silver spit was also featured a few years ago in either Triumph World or one of the other classic mag's. Something like 20k invested. Full leather and burr walnut dash, kagillion watt "stealth" stereo, etc. It seems it was a multi-year, money no object, labour of love. Were it a Jag, it would be a "101" point car... over-restored, etc. I agree that a Spit, while it should not be tatty and unkempt, should still be usable as a daily driver in the good months of a seasonal climate!
