You're replacing them right? Don't need them, any more? Well then read
on.....
Take hacksaw and cut through the rubber between the bolt flanges, instant
releif of pressure.
They are not under so much load that anything flies across the garage.
I would not suggest this method for removing old front shock absorbers,
cutting the nut off the top will release the spring (just in case someone
gets the wrong idea!).
