Marvel Mystery Oil

Does anyone know what Marvel Mystery Oil is composed of?  I've heard of
people putting it into their oil sump, carb damper, and fuel tank, just to
name a few.  Is this stuff just "snake oil" or does it actually perform a
useful function?  What was it originally used for?  It's been on the market
for a very long time.
