Anyone out there in California want to buy my
1965 MkII Spitfire? I got the MkII from the original owner. The interior
is shot but all there. It is in original condition with very little rust
but the original paint is faded. The body and frame are in good shape.
The body has maybe one or two small dents. The window seals are shot. It
has the original factory hardtop in same shape. Soft top frame is
present but no soft top. The car runs and drives but needs U-joints (I
think - knocking noise when when off and on throttle). Engine runs rich
>from one of the carbs - I tried tuning the car but only one of the carbs
would respond. The car had been sitting for almost 10 years when I
bought it but it started right up (I changed the oil and filter first).
It does not appear to be burning any oil. Compression check was
104/105/100/109 without opening throttle. The car is registered in
California with a current non-op.
I am selling because I don't think I will ever restore it. I am in
sort of a quandry right now regarding the spitfires. A couple of months
ago I bought a 1979 spit and have put about a thousand miles on it and
I love driving the car. The problem I am having is that the spitfires
are geared so low that I can't cruise for long distances on the freeway
at anywhere below 4000rpm and I always feel the engine is spinning too
fast. I don't have overdrive and don't really want to install one
(although I am considering this). Also, the car does'nt have the power I
need to go into the mountains like I enjoy doing. As I've mentioned on
the list before I have driven porsche 914's for the last 20 years and,
although I don't think they are as fun to drive as the spit, I could
drive all day at 80mph without feeling I was stressing the car.
I hate to say this, but I am thinking about getting another 914 or
maybe a datsun 240z. If I do that I will probably need to sell my 1979
spitfire also. At any rate, I hope all you spitlisters out there
understand what I am going through. I really do love the car but I don't
have the wherewithall to keep too many cars.
I am asking $1600 for the markII and if I sell my 1979 spitfire (in
very good condition) I will ask for $3800. If my prices are out of line
then feel free to tell me so, I will take no offense. Also, I will
always offer the cars to this list first and will not become involved
with the auction lunacy. Everyone on this list has always helped me with
my questions and only I and any potential buyer will decide the final
and fair selling price.
