<I see three prong thingys sticking out and three dips on the inside diameter
of the sending unit backing plate, which I assume needs to be the part
that's turned. Or do I turn the part with the three tabs sticking out from
it?>
Jeff: It is a pretty simple procedure. Did it a couple of months ago. Just
get a nail punch or broad blade screwdriver and tap one of the projecting
tabs counter-clockwise. It should come off quite easily. However, note the
position of the ring (maybe even mark it) so that you put it back in the same
position. It is normally suggested that you replace the gasket, so you may
want to get one before you take it out. Not much fun to have gas leaking in
the boot the next time you fill the tank. Also, once you get the retaining
ring off you have to twist the sender unit around to get it out to clear the
filler pipe. Note how you do that since you have to get it back in the same
way. If I might ask, you said you have to remove and inspect the sender unit.
Is it giving you some problems? These things seem to either work or not work
so if you are getting some funny fuel gauge readings it may be something else
instead of the sender.
