Which connection to the lamp serves as the ground. The one to the battery
(I am guessing this is one of the connections on the starter solenoid) or to
the alternator?

The ignition light circuit goes from the battery to the lamp,
and then to the alternator. If the connection from the lamp
to the alternator is bad, the light would not light up,
and the alternator may not get the energizing current it needs to start up.
