Subject: Re: Single rail vs three rail - what's the diff?
That reply of yours was a big help. I've wondered just how much better the
single rail box was over the older three rail box. New and improved doesn't
always mean better. My car has a single rail 4 speed in it, but I've got a
three rail overdrive unit to put in someday. I've also got a spare three
rail 4 speed in the parts car.
So, after spending some time with a magic marker and the vicky brit catalog,
I've got all the same bits highlighted, and the differences. Boy, you're
right, there's a whole lot of the same parts between them. It looks like I
should be able to swap the input shaft from the single rail gearbox into the
three rail overdrive box. That would be good on two accounts. I'd get the
better bearing support, and the larger clutch surface. I couldn't tell if
I'd have to turn down the mainshaft or not for the bearing, but that's not a
big deal if I do have to.
Maybe I'll actually get the three rail overdrive in there this summer!
