Thermostatic Switch

I know it has been mentioned before, but I am trying to find a replacement
for a thermostatic switch that fits on top of '79 and '80 Radiators (the one
that turns the fan on).  I cannot find any usual suspects that supply it.
It has been mentioned before that one from a volkswagen would work.  Could
someone give me more details.  Exactly what car?  Part number, Years, store
bought at.  I received the typical stares from Pep boys.
