76 California Spitfire with a Lucas EID distributor. Shaft is quite
wobbly, and the idle is very rough. Carb was replaced with known good
one and that did not help. Meanwhile back at the farm, the original
carb from the 76 ran like a champ on the 79 that ran great before. Can
and who rebushed distributors? Would a Pertronix or Allison unit work
with my wobbly shaft as some have told me they would? And if so, how
come the Lucas ignition seems to be extremely finicky about it? Are the
electronics of the Lucas so much inferior?

For Dave and Fred,
BPNW only has early Delco reman distributors. I can't find reman or new
Lucas EID or CEI anywhere. My 79 has the CEI and runs great. BPNW told
me that the CEI was a good unit and should run forever, whereas the EID
was junk and he was surprised it was still running at all. He also
mentioned that I would be lucky to keep a Pertronix running past it's
two year warranty. This was the first I'd heard of any trouble with a
Pertronix. Any input?

I'm going to try this again with some special key words and phrases like
TRF, Emma Peel drives a Chevy (or Chrysler hahaha), and the second
edition of my Spitfire Mag arrived in December of last year overnight
delivery. I received 2 responses to this post (thanks Fred and Dave).
I've heard much talk about very similar issues and am quite curious as
to why I can't get responses from people I know can help based on past
experience with this list. That reminds me, can someone who is on the
triumph list forward this email to said list and ask anyone who can help
to reply to me directly at mginter@concentric.net

Mike (anxiously awaiting some help)

Dave Moag reminded me of another question I wanted to ask. The top of
this distributor shaft wobbles quite a bit. I recall others talking
about having a dist shaft rebushed. Who does this sort of thing?
Anyone know where I can get a rebuilt dist? Anyone ever bought a
Mallory distributor and fitted a Pertronix to it?

I cannot get my 76 Spit to idle well for anything. It misses and
sputters. It has had a full tune up, and at 2ATDC to 16 BTDC, it still
will not idle smooth. Compression is good (110, 110, 113, 113), and I
did a wholesale swap of carbs from my 79 which runs rock solid. The 76
ran the same and the 79 ran just fine with the carb from the 76. I'm
suspecting the distributor at this point. I have yet to swap them, but
maybe on Tuesday when the sun comes back out (the 79 is outside). I
this why everyone puts in a pertronix? My 79 has the CEI ignition with
the external amplifier and it couldn't run better than it does, so this
is new to me. Anyone have any ideas here?

Mike
