After a drive yesterday ending with some spirited cornering, I did the post
drive inspection. I was surprised to see fresh oil all over my starter.
After further investigation, it was found to be coming from a small hole in
the underside of my mechanical fuel pump. Obviously, a hole designed to be
there, but for what purpose? Did I throw oil up somewhere when I made that
hard left hand turn? The oil almost looked like it was under some pressure
when it came out as it looked splattered on the frame and engine as well,
but primarily on the top of the starter. I ran the engine at idle and every
time I wiped it clean it would begin a new trickle of oil to run down. It
was time to garage her for the night so I haven't checked it since. Any
explaination for this? Is it a normal, temporary purging or is it big
trouble?
Drove great, though...the idle even smoothed out after about 15 miles.
