Jeff,
that is because you had the wrong years and didn't do the right mods to the
engine. The 1600 type 1 can be easily, cheaply, and reliable built to 1800cc,
approx. 80hp.

I have a 74, built to 2L 110hp and it's a great car. I use it all the time to
tow cars on a flatbed trailer. It does 95 mph (without trailer ....) And you
can sleep in it (it's a camper).
Is there ANY car that is better for going to car shows??

No need to take it back. I owned two VW buses - a '69 and '71. NEVER
again!! The motor is too small and underpowered to push a bus (and cargo)
around!
