I have had a little experience with this.
I too have on my 75 Spitfire two holes that are for what I believe was the
original "number plate illuminating plinth"
On the North American models (certainly the late Mark IV and the 1500's),
because of the license plate set up, the illumination was from two lights
set on the rear tail facing each other. The plinth for these cars was like
you describe that you have (and that I FINALLY found in a breakers yard). It
has no illumination and the spacing for the holes is different.
Suggest you stick with what you have as it is a darn sight cheaper than the
illuminating plinth assembly (approx $350 CDN) if you can find it.
If you can find the MBI books -THE ILLUSTRATED TRIUMPH BUYERS GUIDE and the
other TRIUMPH SPORTS CARS, there is a picture in each book of the two set
ups.

I bought a bumper badge from E-bay that came from the rear of a 72 Spitfire.
it
is a simple chrome wedge that bolts on to the top surface of the bumper. My
71
has two round lamps set into the bumper surface to illuminate the license
plate.
The VB catalog, on p158, shows a more complex assembly where the light
lenses
are incorporated right into the wedge. I was looking at a club members less
adulterated 71 today, and his bumper carries the lamp design shown in the VB
catalog. My car is in storage, so I can't really see if the piece I bought
will
fit. VB does not show a setup like mine (round lamps and separate wedge).
Can
anybody help clear up this mystery? Were there more than one style of
license
lamp/bumper badges in the early 70s?
