Having spent over 25 years in the bearing industry as an engineer- I guess I
can be the list expert.  And the heat and oil theory is correct.  The
thickener in grease is simply there to keep the oil from running out when
not in motion.  The excess grease in between the bearings is simply a
reservoir and the bearings being the dam.  And remember too tight is just as
bad as too loose when adjusting endplay.
