I think the debate about the location of the fuel pump becomes somewhat
irrelevant when we consider the volume of fuel the spit engine actually
consumes compared to what an average electric fuel pump can provide. I
might be wrong on this but an inefficient pump should still be far able to
exceed demand.
On my 1500, an electric fuel pump was installed when I got the car. I it
located on the firewall just below the master cylinder area. I have never
had a problem with fuel starvation even running a partial tank of fuel
during a long hard sweeper on the autox course. That is just where I get
the idea that it doesn't much matter, really.
