i would suggest taking the cover off and making sure all the gears
are dissengaged, and go to the cover and make sure the levers are all
in neutral. then, when re-installing the cover, double check that
the gears are all in neutral again. also, make sure that the reverse
actuating lever is picked up by the slot in the linkage in the cover.
i can only assume that your problem was because your reverse gear
was preventing your first gear from spinning.
