Folks, thanks for the various replies.
I definitely will check out the vacuum advance. I know it has one.
Sounds like another of those rubber hose connections has cracked. I have
replaced several obvious ones so far. Either than or I forgot to re-attach the
end at the carb or perhaps the EGR control valve is not working right and stuck
open. Looks like I need to give it all a good check.
