Oh yeah?
Well come over to my house and help me figure out how my 140hp Mercury in-line
6 cylinder outboard runs! I found the magneto after pulling the power head
and clearing out about a million wires. There are six coils(?), with a spark
plug wire going from each, to each cylinder. I can't seem to figure out how
this thing could ever get spark to the right cylinder at the right time! All
that just to fix a water jacket leak. I had to do it myself, but now I know
why they wanted $2600 just to put a couple of gaskets in the engine.
Sure glad I took pictures before I tore it down.

Yes, you did say "Most", but Arthur said "all" distributor fired
engines. Some 2 stroke engines do use distributors (Outboard motors
come to mind)
