According to the veneer manufactureres a "setting" type adhesive would be
best for this application. The manufacturers say this since setting
adhesives harden by a chemical reaction and not by the evaporation of a
solvent as is the case with contact cement and wood workers glue. I have
used both contact cement on my dashboard and a urea setting adhesive on
dashboards I did for other folks. I did my dash with the contact cement six
years ago and it still looks great. The reason I went to the urea adhesive
for the other dashes was that I found if a finished dash using contact
cement and the seven coats of finish was placed in a 110 degree oven the
veneer blistered badly. I assumed that the blistering was caused from the
expansion of any remaing solvent turning to a gas. I don't think it would
be hard for the dash to see those types of temperatures.
With all of that said, setting adhesives are a real pain to work with
because you must come up with some way of clamping the dash while the
adhesive sets.
