I have done this before and yes it is tricky to fish the clip out.
But it can be done using a dentist pick of if have a thin stiff wire,
just bend the end to use that to hook the clip. It took me about 15
minutes to get it out.

I think the oil in the dashpot is use for damping the piston so you will
get a richer mixture during acceleration. Without oil in the damper you
might be a little hesitation during acceleration.
