Windshield frame to body rubber

Help, please, oh learned listers...

I'm trying to install a TR-6 windshield FRAME onto the car, not the glass
into the frame. I know this is the same frame as the pre-71 Spits, so I'm
hoping you folks can steer me correctly. We are having a terrible time
working with the rubber gasket that (I think) goes over both the front and
the back of the frame. After four hours of hard labor for two of us
tonight, we have the frame partially on, with the rubber on properly between
both ends and the first hold-down bolt on each side. I'm pretty sure this
is reproduction rubber--has anyone had any problems with this? It seems WAY
too small to do what it needs to do...originally, about a week ago, we had
to stretch the darn thing just to get it to the point where both posts would
go through the respective holes in the gasket. Either there has to be an
easier way to install this piece or I'm going nuts...(no comments, Ralph!).
Please help! Thanks!
