Yes, the older VW's use swing axles. However , they don't have
U-Joints. There is a very peculiar assembly that has the ends of the
axles (that attach to the transaxle) flared out into sort of a "V"
configuration and flat on the sides. THis "V" fits into a side gear
that turns with the differential and the shafts pivot within that. The
whole thing is protected by a rubber boot and is lubricated by
transmission oil. It actually works quite well. In the past 5 years, I
have had many problems with brakes, accelerator linkage, carburetor,
fuel pump, etc.; but I have not had any trouble whatever with the axles
in my daughter's '65 VW.
