Actually that's not far off from the factory specs.  Normally, u-joints
were secured with different thickness circlips to eliminate this slop
whenever u-joints were replaced.  Now-a-days, the circlips supplied are all
the same (narrow?) ones and as a result you get wear and clicking noises
even after replacing a joint.  One cure that I have used is to make up
shims (essentially a round, very thin disk the diameter of the cup) that go
between the clip and the cup out of very thin material (aluminum coke cans
work well).  The idea is to take up almost all the slack, while allowing
the clip to seat in the groove.  Don't worry if it only takes one shim on
one side.  Were only talking a couple of thousands here.  The only other
way is to find different thickness clips and size them for zero clearance
as per the factory workshop manual-
