Greg;

Most likely it does step down the voltage. It should be indicated somewhere
on it. I have two portable CD players with car adaptors: one steps the
voltage down to 9 volts and the other one steps it down to 4.5 volts.

How timely that this would come up. I have a portable CD player with a
"car adaptor kit" which includes a cigarette lighter adaptor to save on
batteries.
Since my original lighter had long since gone to it's reward, I replaced it
with
a universal aftermarket one. Problem is that I'm still not getting a good
contact
and power cuts in and out, although the freakin' thing works perfectly in my

wife's (real) car.

Yeah, I could troubleshoot it some more, but I was wondering if I could
just cut the lighter adaptor head off and wire the portable CD player
directly
into the car's electrical system. Suitably fused and with a quick
disconnect
of course. Or does that "head" step down voltage or something and I
will burn out my CD player?

TIA!
