I agree. I have seen similar rumors about Mercury in Automotive News as well - -
Not a clear "brand identity".  When I was growing up, it seemed everyone I knew
had total brand loyalty to either Ford, Chevy, or Plymouth, and would never
consider changing. We didn't know anybody rich enough to own a Lincoln, Buick,
or Chrysler.
