I got back a while ago too but not without a little story. As many of you
know, a few weeks ago I posted a blurb about having my 76 Spitfire for sale.
Fellow Spit-Lister Mike Ginter saw this and decided to come down with his
wife to take a look. Then I mentioned the Woodley car show and so he came
this last weekend- from Denver CO to Orange County CA. So yesterday we did
the deal and he got himself a very nice Spitfire while I got some cash in my
wallet. Yes, the car is sold.
Today Sunday, we all drove to the Woodley park show. I drove in my 1960
Mini-Cooper, he drove his new Spitfire while his wife followed in the van,
and Bart, a member from the Mini-Club joined us as well. 20 miles or so
into the run I smell something odd and hope its a car in front of me. Then
I notice my temp gauge reading higher than normal. Then Bart called me on
the cell phone and says I've got something smoking at one of my back wheel.
So all 4 of us exit the freeway to investigate. A week or so ago I adjusted
the drum brakes on the Mini and apparently got carried away and the wheel
was running tight. We took the wheel off and I took a wrench to the
adjuster which free'd the wheel and we were back on our way. My car was
still running hot but it was a very hot day. Finally an hour or so later we
arrive at the show to set-up. There must have been 30 Mini's which was a
great turnout. I saw about 8-10 Spitfires of various flavors, among the
estimated 4-500 cars of British marquees.
At the end of the day we all had different directions to go and I was on my
own to drive back. Sure enough, the heat of the day was too much for the
little 1000cc engine of my Mini and despite the over 100 temps in the car I
turned on the heater full blast in an effort to provide more cooling to the
engine. This worked and kept things high but bearable. I was plenty hot
myself but I figured I could shower quicker than I could rebuild a melted
engine. I stopped about halfway home and let the engine cool in the shade
of a hotel's parking lot. I took a water bottle inside the hotel to fill up
and when I returned two English-men were starring at my car. They said they
were just amazed to see a Mini, and a 1960 model in the condition it is.
They got out their camera and snapped a few shots. They were here to buy
American muscle cars and we talked for 20 minutes while the car cooled a
bit. We exchanged numbers and email address's and now we each have another
contact to get parts, help etc. All in all it was a good day and I'll post
a few photo's soon.
