Jim,
I know of one in central Iowa (a '66 mkII). It was in kind of rough shape,
but the whole car could be had pretty cheap, owner is a friend who offered it
to me for $150. I looked at the car last summer, but I don't have the space
to take on another project. Here is a quick description from what I can
remember.
Body is all there, except for front bumper. Bonnet has large hole cut through
the top with an old pontiac 4-cyl engine sticking through it. The original
engine is there, but there is no tranny. There is a spare MK3 bonnet that
goes with the car. Rust holes through the floor pans and trunk bottom.
Guages are all there, seats are only frames, glass is good. NO TITLE! Car
was last registered in Colorado in '86.
Just over a week ago I also looked at a '67 MK3. Complete car with both soft
(owner said it was new, I didn't see it) and hard tops. Car has not been run
for 5 years, at least that's what the owner said, it looked to me that it had
probably been longer. It looks as if the floor pans have been replaced, a lot
of bangs and dents in the body. The engine was rebuilt, but then the car was
parked and they never finished the body work. The owner was asking $600.
Don't know about current status of title, but I seem to remember older Iowa
plates on it.
Let me know if you would like the contact on either of these cars.
No financial interest, I just hate to see a Spit go to rust.
Thanks,
Paul Mostrom
