Hi Doug:

I experienced the same condition recently with my '73 Spitfire which I 
purchased this past January.  I bled the system, releasing lots of air and 
dirty fluid.  The car has shifted smoothly since the procedure.  I have been 
carefully watching for leaks but have found none so far.  Good luck.

Incidentally, if anyone knows of a way to bleed the clutch system WITHOUT 
removing the transmission tunnel that would be a great piece of information 
to share!
