engine temprature / economy

Well, it looks like I might have to do some tuning.

My car last year was running hot quite a bit last year, and I was getting
horrible fuel economy..

Thinking back a month ago, the needle on the single carb was a wee bit
wobbly.

I'm assuming its running too rich, hence running too hot? I'm a little
confused since I was also told that if it's too lean it can cause
overheating as well. Also I was advised to retard the timing a bit.
