Dean,
This applies to a MkII, hopefully it's close.
There is a pinching block about halfway down the steering shaft approximately 5
inches from the firewall. This block is bare metal and has two 1/2'' head bolts
claming it together.
This block holds the bare steering shaft "D" shaped shaft to the main steering
shaft
which comes down from the steering wheel. Remove this block.
At the r&p assembly and just below this "joint" you speak of that's too big to
withdraw along the column *(cause it is)* there is a through bolt that holds the
bottom of that joint onto the splined shaft which comes out of the pinion case
assembly. Once that bolt is out you need to spread that joint bottom so the
whole
affair will slip off the splined shaft.
That entire lowe shaft will then slip UP toward the driver compartment just
until
the "joint" you mentioned is at the firewall. Then you can lift the shaft and
pull
it out toward the front of the car.
I hope this is clear.
