Spitphleyers,

The "flat tubular" luggage racks were a dealer installed option
on '75 and later Spits. These racks have flat central slats
with a tubular frame. The cross-sectional shape of the tubular
frame is more oval than round. Most of the rack is aluminium,
but the four mounting "corners" are cast and chromed.

These racks came in 4 different configurations. A wide & narrow
arched version and a wide & narrow flat rack.

The arched versions were actually intended for MGs, the wider
rack best fitting the "B". However, since both makes of car were
often sold under one roof, the arched racks (both wide & narrow)
found their way onto a lot of Triumph boot lids. The dealers
could also stock less unique parts by only using the arched
versions. These racks sit too high off a Triumph boot lid
in the center of their side-to-side span (IMHO).

The flat racks follow the Triumph bootlid contour more closely.
Although the wider (TR6) version of this rack will fit on a Spit
bootlid, it will rest on (and wear through) the paint in the
center of it's rear span.

If you take notice at the next LBC show you attend, you'll
probably see all 4 types randomly fitted to (late model)
Triumph & MG cars.

It's been (mostly) a pleasure being on this list digest.
