I pulled my cylinder head due to low compression in cylinders 3 and 4.  
It turned out that the head gasket was intact but the intake valves (I 
believe 
that the smaller ones are the intake valves) were chipped, with a small piece
missing from the bottom of each.  Luckily I have a spare head (two heads ARE
better than one).
What would cause this?  I did have some pinging and running on, but I didn't
think that it was that extreme.  Do I need to retard the timing or switch to 
a 
higher octane gas?
