It's a bit missleading using shipping weights of a spitfire, remember the
US1500's manages 1900 lbs curbe weight. My UK 1500 is about 1800 lbs.
A Spitfire weighs a vast amount for what it is, I bet if you were to use the
same type of steel as modern cars, to the same stress requirements as the
Spitfire you would save alot of weight.
I learnt to drive in a car weighing 735kg unlaiden a Nova, then my first car
a Metro weighed in at 765kg, and the Spitfire 835kg Unlaiden. If you look
at car's convertable sports cars like the Honda Beat, with 700cc's and the
length of a Nissan Micra it's got to be light. Or the Suzuski Cappuccino,
660cc's and 0-60 in 11.3 seconds (beting all but the UK 1500), and the
chassis is at least as stable in corners as any of the bigger cars above.
Think of all the emmissions gear it carries around.
PS I am using kg's because I am used to seing car weights in tons, so a
Spitfire is .835 of a ton, lbs just confuse me. When it get's above 16lbs,
I need to work in stones, or in the 90's and the Metric system.
James - from the last UK generation to see rulers which had inches as well
as cm other than in history classes.
PPS I can't wate until they ban the Pint, getting L glasses of beer will
save me a lot of walking
