Ken,
You need to check the points to make sure they aren't grounded:
1. Remove the dist. cap and rotor.
2. Remove the low tension wire from dist. (it goes to the coil)
3. Rotate the eng. so the points are closed
4. Connect one lead from an Ohm meter from the lug that the low voltage wire
connects to, connect the other lead to ground - the dist case will do.
5. The meter should read 0 ohms (or at least close to it - you may have to
calibrate the meter)
6. With you finger (or some other insulator - ie piece of wood etc.) push
the points open. The meter reading should change and go towards infinite
resistance. If not - your points are shorted out. This is usually caused
by not having the insulator properly attached to the points. On various
cars, this insulator takes different identitys. On some, it is a plastic
top hat on both the top and bottom of the spring where it connects to the
vertical post. On others it is a cardboard or plastic sheet that is place
at the screw to attach the low tension wire.
