Single rail shifter gone waco!!

Listers,
I installed a single rail gearbox in my '74 last year.  When I did I used a
USED shifter that was given to me, yesterday it went to pot.  The movement
is very sloppy and you dont have to push down to get reverse, which is scary
to say the least....  Will the ball and spring that I see in the VB catalog
fix this problem??  Any one have any hints??
