It does it usually in Fourth gear at around 35 to 40 MPH.
I removed all that mess, short of putting up with the noise what else can
you do ?

It could sound like a multitude of things.
...well...using your description, look at it this way...
as the crank is spinning in the oil seal on the cover...
there IS a bit of friction. I guess you could consider the vibration setup
as the seal being your washer. Any vibration in the seal/shaft contact area
would be amplified via the flat surface of the cover....
just like the cone of aa audio speaker. The coil in the center of the
speaker
moves... but it's the attached cone's surface area moving enough air
(pressure change) for your ear to hear it.

It sounds to me like a big washer on a rod and the rod is spinning very
fast.

The Haynes manual says not to clean engine parts having oil galley ways with
kerosene. Does anyone know why?
