Mike,
If the tach goes to zero and you have not pushed down on the clutch, it
is a good possibility that you have electrical problems in your ignition
system. The tach in an 80 Spit is electronic and if power to the
electronics is going away, it would also cause the tach to go dead.
I'd first check the fuses for corrosion and loose fit, then I'd check
the wiring contacts all along the circuit feeding the power to the
ignition system.
It sure sounds like this is where the trouble lies, so keep us apprised
of your progress.
