Just to say, I hunted arround a scapyard a couple of days ago, and got me an
A127 45 altinator. 45 Amp, made in about 1987 straight swap, all the
fittings are the same size, only thing is the adjustment hole is replaced
with a tapped hole and metric bolt. If it came from a Metro this has to be
screwed in the other side. The pully offset is perfect. The plug from the
Spitfire fits it perfectly. The voltage regulation is so much better,
nolonger do I get a boling sound from the battery, I now have bright
headlamps.
I spent found an earlyer model altinator on a montego, mounted behind the
engin low down. Took me 1/2 and hour to get it off, started to walk out and
found the later modle A127 on a D reg Metro top front of the A+ serise.
Took 10 minuets. Looking round it seems that all the earlyer modles have
missing altinators, yet nearly all the cars with the A127 still have them
in. So I guess the later moddel is more relyable.
Oh yes, you mabe need 2 inches more on the fan belt, although you can get
away with the old one! And you now have easy access to the 1st spark plug,
because you nolonger have 2 inches of plastic casing on it.
And it looks nice, you look at it and say to yourself that is a nice looking
altinator:-)
So everone in the UK should get out to your local scrapyard this weakend!
