Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my charging system query.  
Consensus
is that the alternator diodes are likely on their way out.  Hopefully they'll
last long enough for me to install the used Lucas alternator I picked up from
Tucson bound Joe Curry last weekend.  Does anybody out there have a spare one
of the 3 prong connectors which plugs into the Lucas unit?
