I just bought a 76' 1500, and have a couple of questions. One is
realitively easy, the other may not be.
First, what is the ballpark value of a 1976 Spitfire 1500 with a rock solid
body that only needs a couple of smaller than dime sized rust spots fixed,
some rust in the battery box and a repaint, an interior that could use
restoration, but doesn't show anything worse that sunfading and a couple of
small tears, a top in terrific condition, and a tonneau. It also has
ignition problems, but less than 50K miles, brand new tires, and has been
garaged it's entire life.
Second, what is the best method of addressing the ignition problems? Right
now the only thing that we can figure out to do is to try to find an
original distributor and keep the 6v coil and resistor. Is there a way to
convert the car to a more modern system without ruining it? (Preferably a
non-Lucas ignition?) We can't even begin to figure out what the last owner
attempted to do to fix it. They did a lot of rewiring and had a strange
mix-match of non-original components and non of them were the right
components for the car. Thankfully we were able to salvage the original
wiring harness.
Thanks a lot :) I am really anticipating the advice. Not being able to
drive my perfect new car is driving me insane. I now have the priveledge of
owning a Spitfire, but have yet to drive one.
